Lactic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that is slightly milder than glycolic acid. Though lactic acid can be derived from milk, the lactic acid utilized in Apriori Beauty products is synthetic. Like glycolic acid, lactic acid is used to improve the skin’s appearance and texture by aiding in the sloughing of dead cells from the skin’s surface. Lactic acid works by dissolving the “glue†that holds dead skin cells on the surface, allowing them to be released thus revealing healthier, younger looking skin. It also helps reduce the signs of environmental aging, hyperpigmentation, and scarring. Because of their small molecular size, glycolic and lactic acids are better at penetrating the skin and are considered more effective than other AHAs. Also see Alpha Hydroxy Acid and Apriori Beauty’s consumer product knowledge article, Did You Know? Know Your Acids.
Lactospores are probiotic, lactic acid producing bacteria that help improve digestive health. In addition to increasing the concentration of enzymes used in the stomach and intestines for digestion, lactospores help prevent the growth of harmful microorganisms that can cause diarrhea and constipation.

Lecithin is an ingredient composed of phospholipids derived primarily from soy. It has excellent qualities as a natural emulsifier, emollient, water-binding agent, and antioxidant, and helps protect the skins natural acid mantle and barrier function. Lecithin is also a highly effective vehicle for delivering nutrients to the surface layers of the skin.
Lemon oil is a natural, fragrant plant extract.
Lemongrass oil is a natural, fragrant plant extract.
Infrared light is a type of electromagnetic radiation emitted by the sun; far infrared light has a wavelength greater than 4 microns. Despite the fact that we cannot see far infrared radiation, it is perceived by thermoreceptors in the skin as heat. Studies have shown that FIR light therapy can stimulate wound healing mechanisms in the skin. Its additional benefits include the following: 1) Skin is warmed, unclogging pores and expanding capillaries. 2) Blood flow increases, helping eliminate toxins associated with aging and fatigue. 3) Mitochondrial stimulation results in increased enzyme activity and metabolism. 4) Promotes the breakdown of cellulite, fat, trapped water, and wastes. 5) Promotes the regeneration of skin tissue. 6) Increases oxygen and nutrient delivery to cells resulting in increased skin vitality. FIR light therapy is one of the 4 functions provided by Apriori Beauty’s Derma Firm Illuminator.
Lime oil is a natural, fragrant plant extract.
Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid (EFA) required in the body for a variety of biological processes. In the skin, linoleic acid plays an important role in cell regulation and skin barrier function; skin that is deficient in essential fatty acids is characterized by abnormal barrier function often associated with atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Several studies have demonstrated the ability of topically applied linoleic acid to restore barrier function and skin health. Lineolic acid also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Lipids are a broad group of compounds including fats, waxes, and sterols that have several important biological functions such as energy storage, cell communication, and as a primary component of cell membranes. In the skin, lipids are essential for proper skin barrier function. Lipids are used in cosmetics as emollients, skin conditioning agents, and moisturizers.
Lipid bilayers are composed primarily of phospholipids, which contain a hydrophilic (water loving) head and two hydrophobic (water hating) tails. This molecular structure causes the phospholipids to arrange into a two-layer sheet when exposed to water, with the head ends facing outward and the tail ends facing inward towards each other. Lipid bilayers make up cellular membranes, and play a major role in cell communication and barrier function. When arranged into vesicles (sac-like structures), lipid bilayers can also form liposomes, which are highly effective for ingredient delivery in skin care formulations.
Liposomes are microscopic, fluid filled vesicles composed of a lipid bilayer arranged in a circular fashion. In skin care formulations, liposomes act as highly effective ingredient delivery systems. The lipid bilayer of liposomes is made primarily of phospholipids, which mimic natural skin lipids and effectively deliver ingredients into deeper layers of the skin. After ingredients are deposited, the phospholipids can be assimilated into skin where they help promote healthy skin barrier function.
Longevity genes are genes involved in the regulation of cellular processes that determine cell health and lifespan. For example, genes that dictate metabolic capacity and the cell’s ability to respond to stresses are involved with determining longevity at the cellular level. With recent advancements in genomics and the science of aging, research suggests that targeting genes involved with cellular processes can help increase longevity by preventing cell damage and disease. Longevity gene modifiers are an essential component of Apriori Beauty’s NutrientReservoir™. For example, acetyl-resveratrol is known to activate enzymes in the cell known as sirtuins that regulate several cellular processes including metabolism, gene expression, and immune responses. Research has shown that increasing sirtuin expression results in increased cell health and lifespan.
Goji berries have been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine for their ability to support the liver, kidneys, and eyes. Recent research has shown this “super fruit†to have a wide variety of health benefits due to the present of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and a group of unique polysaccharides. Reported health benefits include anti-aging effects, neuroprotection, increased metabolism, immune system support, and potent antioxidant activity.
