pH - read more

A measurement of how acidic or basic a substance is based on the concentration of hydrogen ions in solution. Pure water has a neutral pH value of 7.0; solutions with a pH less than 7 are considered acidic and those with a pH greater than 7 are considered basic. The pH of skin is slightly acidic, due to the presence of a natural acid mantle that acts as the first line a defense against bacteria and other microorganisms. Skin care products that are not formulated with pH in mind (i.e. harsh soaps and surfactants) can strip skin of the natural acid mantle, disrupting barrier function and leaving it susceptible to infection and inflammation. Apriori Beauty’s products are formulated to be pH correct, to prevent stripping skin of its acid mantle.

Phospholipid - read more

Phospholipids are a class of lipids that contain a hydrophilic (water loving) head and two hydrophobic (water repelling) tails. This molecular structure causes the phospholipids to arrange into a two-layer sheet when exposed to water, with the head ends facing outward and the tail ends facing inward towards each other. Lipid bilayers make up cellular membranes, and play a major role in cell communication and barrier function. When arranged into vesicles (sac-like structures), lipid bilayers can also form liposomes, which are highly effective for ingredient delivery in skin care formulations. A common phospholipid in living organisms is lecithin.

Photoaging - read more

When considering the aging process and skin, there are two major types of aging to consider, intrinsic and extrinsic aging. Extrinsic aging results when exposure to external factors damages skin, causing premature aging. Numerous factors can negatively affect the skin, the most common of which is sun exposure (extrinsic aging is, therefore, often referred to as photoaging). Other factors include pollution, poor diet, cigarette smoke, stress, and gravity. Exposure results in skin with age spots, blotchy pigmentation, deep wrinkles, and a rough, leathery appearance. Also see intrinsic aging.

Phytochemical - read more
